Why are your headshot sessions different than other headshot sessions I’ve had?
answer
I approach the sessions differently than many standard headshot photographers. I work with natural light only in a location where you are comfortable in. It is very laid back and we do a lot of chatting, laughing and getting to know each other without being rushed or put into stiff poses. I take the time to get the best variety of shots showing who you are. My focus is on you, not my next session or how many rolls of film (or cards) I have used. Some of my clients have described their session as actually being fun! While I take my work seriously, I am comfortable enough in my knowledge of natural light and working with different locations that I can relax and get to know you. If you are looking for something different, comfortable, and completely you, then you have come to the right place.
What is a typical session like?
answer
A typical session lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. We begin by just taking some test shots to warm up. If we are in a location where we can roam, we will usually do a few shots in a variety of spots in your location. Sessions are very laid back and we will do a lot of talking and getting to know each other. Instead of stiff poses, I let you get into a comfortable position and then I will gently direct you so you look your best. You will probably hear my taking a lot of shots, my goal is to get the most variety and the best expressions out of you. Usually the best expressions are the ones just after you think you are done with the shot. There will be time to change shirts or check your hair and make-up in between moving spots. We aren’t rushed. I want you to be as comfortable as possible.
What times and locations are the best?
answer
Since I am an on-location photographer and work with natural light, any place with plenty of sunshine and shade (if outside) or anyplace with at least a few bigger windows or a patio door (if inside) work best. Keep in mind what you want your background to be like. Even though your headshots are mainly of your head and shoulders, having a pleasing background is best. Anything from brick to colored walls to greenery works, it just depends on who you are and what you prefer. Are you more rustic or industrial? Or do you prefer more natural? I have done sessions everywhere, from downtown Denver to garages to parks to homes. The only thing to keep in mind is weather if you are planning an outdoor session. If the day of your session is supposed to be very rainy or a snowy, it will probably be best to reschedule unless you have a backup place for indoors.
What should I do to prepare for my session?
answer
Please plan on getting a full night’s sleep the night before your session. If you tend to have dry skin or lips, apply lotion or lip balm liberally before you go to bed. If your session is in the morning, try to be up early enough so you look awake for your session. The last thing is to just relax and be you.
Do you have a make-up artist or hair stylist?
answer
Because my sessions are all about you being yourself, I prefer it if you do your own make-up and hair how you would for an audition. If you need make-up or hair pointers, be sure to check with a professional hair or make-up stylist in time to practice on your own.
What should I bring to my session?
answer
Bring a couple changes of clothes, solid colors with sleeves work best. Bring a couple different colors and then a neutral (like a dark grey or cream or dark blue). Have a friend help you choose which ones look best on you (you know that shirt that you almost always receive compliments on? that one is usually a good choice unless it has a wild print). Try to avoid extremes like white and black. Layers are always great too. Be sure to have a mirror, tissues, lip balm and any make up or hair accessories you may need for touch-ups.
Do you do retouching?
answer
I do minor retouching on all the files you will receive. If you have a specific blemish or spot you would like removed, please let me know at the session. I do not remove anything that is permanent (like beautiful freckles!), but I can lightly smooth out wrinkles or other permanent features. The idea of retouching is to show you at your best, not show a completely different person. Nothing bothers casting directors more than to have an actor show up looking completely different than their headshot.
How quickly will I receive my files?
answer
About two weeks after your session, you will receive a link to an online gallery containing your ten files. Please look these over and let me know whether you would like more retouching. When the retouching is approved, you will receive a link to download your files within two business days. Within a week, you will receive a CD and a reproduction release in the mail. Please be sure to back up your files to multiple places, I am not responsible for lost files.
Can I see all my shots, even the outtakes?
answer
Only your best ten shots are shown. Because of the candid nature of the session, there are a lot more blinks and unflattering facial expressions than a more traditional studio would have. All unflattering images are immediately deleted. Please don’t worry about those that aren’t shown, I won’t keep any great shots from you. On occasion, some sessions may have a couple more than ten GREAT files and I will include those in your gallery at no additional cost. If you need more than ten files, it is suggested you choose the Deluxe Session, which includes 30 files.
Do you work with agents?
answer
I do not work directly with agents. I only work with the actor or actress needing headshots. If you have an agent, you should check with them before scheduling a session with E Tyler Photography to see if they have a specific look they are wanting for your next shot. Please let me know in advance if there is a specific look preferred.
Do you have a studio or do studio work?
answer
Not at this time.
Do you do color or black & white?
answer
All headshot sessions are in full color. If you are needing some in black & white, please let me know.
Do I have to be an actor to have a headshot session with you?
answer
Not at all! If you have another need for headshots and are wanting a more natural look, please feel free to schedule a session.
Do you do modeling shots (not just headshots)?
answer
I do not at this time.
Do you offer prints in bulk?
answer
You receive your files to print at your convenience. Most agencies have their own printer they use and you can usually find a more cost efffective place that handles bulk prints than what I can provide. If you are wanting a few high quality prints for friends and family to frame, please let me know.
